Bioinformatics
is a field which uses computers to store and analyze
molecular biological information. Using this information in
a digital format,
bioinformatics can then solve problems of molecular biology,
predict
structures, and even simulate macromolecules. In a more general
sense,
bioinformatics may be used to describe any use of computers
for the
purposes of biology, but the molecular-biology specific definition
is by far
the most common.
In order to exploit the wealth of information a new field
of science has
arisen that fuses biology and medicine on one side with mathematics,
statistics and computer science on the other side. This new
field of
science is known as bioinformatics. |
