  What is Bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics is a field which uses computers to store and analyze
molecular biological information. Using this information in a digital format,
bioinformatics can then solve problems of molecular biology, predict
structures, and even simulate macromolecules. In a more general sense,
bioinformatics may be used to describe any use of computers for the
purposes of biology, but the molecular-biology specific definition is by far
the most common.
In order to exploit the wealth of information a new field of science has
arisen that fuses biology and medicine on one side with mathematics,
statistics and computer science on the other side. This new field of
science is known as bioinformatics.

Bioinformatics deals with any type of data that is of interest to biologists

DNA and protein sequences
Gene _expression (microarray)
articles from the literature and databases of citations
raw data collected from any type of field or laboratory experiment
software

Biologists require simple, powerful, and intuitive tools to manipulate data in infinte and unpredictable combinations
Bioinformatics is clearly a multi-disciplinary field including:

computer systems management
networking, database design
computer programming
molecular biology
mathematical algorithms used to build the tools.

  Challenges of Bioinformatics:-

The huge dataset problem
Biologists have been very successful in finding the sequences of DNA and protein molecules
automated DNA sequencers
bulk sequencing of cDNAs (ESTs)
Information scientists have had a tough time keeping up with the data

How can computers keep up with the exponential growth of data? Disk storage? Processor speed? Search algorithms?
The new science of Bioinformatics has been forced to grow up rapidly in
order to handle this flood of information.

Branches of Bioinformatics:

Genomics
Proteomics
Pharmacogenomics
Phylogenetics Analysis
Data mining
Software Development
Medical Informatics
Agri Informatics
